ISO 8496 defines a ring tensile test for metallic tubes, in which a ring cut from the tube is pulled until fracture to reveal surface or internal defects and transverse strength. To match a setup to this test, talk with our team.
What ISO 8496 Covers
The ring test loads a short ring of tube in tension around its circumference, which stresses the tube wall transversely. It is used to check ductility and detect longitudinal defects that an axial test may miss.
How the Test Is Run
A ring is cut from the tube and stretched over two mandrels or pins until it fractures. The load and the way the ring deforms and breaks indicate transverse strength and defect sensitivity.
Preparing Specimens
Clean, burr-free ring edges and accurate ring width are important for a valid result. To set up ring tensile testing on tubes, request a quote.
