What ISO 6506 Covers

The Brinell test presses a hard ball into the material under a defined force and measures the diameter of the resulting indentation. The large indent averages over a wide area, which suits coarse or non-uniform microstructures such as castings and forgings.

How the Result Is Obtained

A ball of specified diameter is pressed at a defined force for a set dwell time, and the indentation diameter is measured optically. The Brinell hardness number follows from the force and indentation area.
