ISO 4545-2 — Knoop hardness testing machine verification and calibration

← Back to all standards

ISO 4545-2 is the international standard for verifying and calibrating Knoop hardness testing machines used on metallic materials. It confirms the machine performance that supports reliable Knoop results on thin sections, coatings, and brittle materials. To verify a Knoop tester or specify one, talk with our team.

What ISO 4545-2 Verifies

The standard checks the test forces, the elongated Knoop diamond indenter, and the optical system used to measure the long diagonal, together with overall machine performance confirmed against certified reference blocks.

Direct and Indirect Checks

Verification uses two methods together:

  • Direct: checks of the applied forces, indenter condition, and the measuring system.
  • Indirect: testing certified Knoop reference blocks and comparing readings against their certified values.

Why It Matters

Knoop testing is chosen where a shallow, elongated indent suits thin or brittle samples, so measuring accuracy is decisive. A current ISO 4545-2 verification keeps those results defensible.
