ISO 19819: Metallic materials — Tensile testing in liquid helium

ISO 19819 is the ISO tensile testing method for metallic materials tested while immersed in liquid helium, at about 4.2 K (around -269 degrees C). It is used for superconducting and cryogenic structural materials. To plan liquid-helium tensile testing, talk with our team.

What ISO 19819 Covers

The method applies to tensile testing at liquid-helium temperature, the most demanding cryogenic condition. It defines how the specimen and load train operate while immersed, and how force, extension, and any discontinuous yielding are measured.

Cryogenic Testing Setup

Testing at 4.2 K requires a cryostat, materials and grips that stay ductile and dimensionally stable at the temperature, and strain measurement that works in the bath. Discontinuous (serrated) yielding is common and is handled per the method.

Yield and tensile strength, elongation, and behaviour specific to liquid-helium conditions, used for superconductor and fusion or magnet structural design.
