ISO 15579: Metallic materials — Tensile testing at low temperature

ISO 15579 is the ISO tensile testing method for metallic materials at low (sub-ambient) temperatures. It adds controlled cooling and cold-temperature measurement to a standard tensile test. To set up low-temperature tensile testing, talk with our team.

What ISO 15579 Covers

The method applies when tensile properties are required below room temperature, such as for cryogenic service and cold-climate applications. It defines how the specimen is cooled, held at temperature, and pulled while the target temperature is maintained.

Cold-Temperature Setup

The specimen is brought to and held at the target temperature using a cooled chamber or bath, with temperature measured on the gauge section. Extensometry and grips must function reliably at the test temperature.

Properties Reported

Proof or yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation at the low test temperature, used for cryogenic and low-temperature design.
