EN (European Standards) are developed by CEN and CENELEC and must be adopted identically by the national standards bodies of member countries, replacing conflicting national standards. This gives a single testing method used across Europe.
Why EN standards matter in testing
An EN provides one harmonized procedure for the European market, which simplifies conformity and CE-related work. Many EN mechanical-testing standards adopt an ISO method directly and are published as EN ISO.
What EN standards cover
EN covers metals, plastics, construction products, and composites, with test methods for tensile, flexural, compression, impact, and bend. Where an equivalent ISO method exists, the EN version is usually numerically identical.
How to read an EN designation
EN designations may be national-European or dual with ISO:
| Part | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| EN <n> | EN 10002 | A European Standard (older metals tensile series) |
| EN ISO | EN ISO 6892-1 | A European adoption of an ISO method (identical text) |
| Part / year | -1 : 2019 | Part number and year, as in the ISO scheme |
