BS 18 is the British Standard method for tensile testing of metallic materials at room temperature, including aerospace materials. It has largely been superseded by the harmonized European and international methods, so most current work references those instead. To map a legacy BS 18 requirement to a current method, talk with our team.
What BS 18 Covers
The method describes room-temperature tensile testing of metals to generate baseline strength and ductility data. Its scope and results parallel the modern harmonized standards that replaced it.
Current Replacement
For new work, use the harmonized standards that superseded BS 18: EN 10002-1 at the European level and, currently, ISO 6892-1. Older drawings that cite BS 18 can be mapped to these with documented equivalence.
Properties Reported
Yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, and reduction of area, consistent with modern room-temperature tensile methods.
Reading the Designation
Cited as BS 18 with its part and year. Confirm whether the controlling specification still permits BS 18 or expects the current ISO method.
Related Standards
ISO 6892-1 is the current room-temperature metal tensile method, and ASTM E8/E8M is the ASTM equivalent.
