ASTM E8/E8M is the reference method for room-temperature tensile testing of metallic materials. E8 or E8M: One Method, Two Unit Systems

Both designations cover the same procedure. E8 expresses dimensions and results in inch-pound units, while E8M uses SI (metric) units. Confirm which convention a specification cites, because it fixes the units for your specimen drawings, extensometer, and report. For most round specimens, the gauge length is set as a multiple of the specimen diameter, which affects both machining and extensometer selection.

Specimen Forms and Dimensions

ASTM E8/E8M defines flat and round specimens sized to the product form under test. The standard geometries are:

  • Standard flat (sheet-type) specimen: 0.5 in (12.5 mm) wide with a 2 in (50 mm) gauge length.
  • Standard round specimen: 0.500 in (12.5 mm) diameter with a 2 in (50 mm) gauge length, where the gauge length is four times the diameter (4D). Smaller round specimens are defined for limited material.

Coupons are taken from plate, sheet, strip, bar, rod, wire, forgings, and castings, or machined from finished parts and test blocks. A specimen represents the location it was cut from rather than the whole part, so sampling position is part of the test decision for qualification and QA/QC.

Why ASTM E8/E8M Matters

ASTM E8/E8M is the common reference that makes tensile data comparable across suppliers, heat lots, and production runs. When it is cited, it drives the specimen geometry, the strain-measurement approach, and the exact values that must be reported. Typical uses include material certification (mill and heat-lot testing), process validation such as heat-treat and welding support, incoming inspection, and routine production monitoring.

Typical Test Workflow

A compliant test links specimen preparation, loading, strain measurement, and reporting in a repeatable sequence:

  1. Confirm the cited designation and year, and whether the requirement uses the E8 or E8M convention.
  2. Prepare specimens from the required product form or sampling location, machined to the standard shape.
  3. Set up the testing system with grips and alignment suited to the specimen type.
  4. Measure extension or strain, typically with an extensometer, to capture yield and elongation results.
  5. Run the test at room temperature and calculate the required properties, such as yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, and reduction of area.

Equipment for ASTM E8/E8M

The method calls for a conventional uniaxial tensile setup with accurate force and strain measurement. A typical configuration includes:

  • A universal testing machine, electromechanical or servo-hydraulic, sized to the alloy and section.
  • Wedge or collet-style grips matched to round and flat specimens to prevent slip and grip-induced failures.
  • A load cell and an extensometer chosen for the required gauge length and strain range.
