ASTM E1012: Verification of Testing Frame & Specimen Alignment

← Back to all standards

ASTM E1012 is the ASTM practice for verifying the alignment of a testing machine and its load train under tensile or compressive axial load. Good alignment keeps unwanted bending out of the specimen, which protects the accuracy of strength and strain results. To check or improve alignment on your load frame, talk with our team.

What ASTM E1012 Measures

Using a strain-gauged alignment specimen, the practice quantifies bending strain relative to axial strain while the load train is under load. The result shows how much of the measured strain comes from misalignment rather than pure tension or compression.

Why Alignment Matters

Bending adds to the stress on one side of a specimen and subtracts on the other, biasing yield, tensile, and fatigue results and causing premature or off-axis failures. Methods such as ASTM E8/E8M assume a load train aligned within limits, so an E1012 check supports both accurate data and repeatable specimen behaviour.

How the Check Is Performed

A typical alignment check follows a short, repeatable sequence:

  • Install a strain-gauged alignment specimen in the grips or fixtures used for testing.
  • Apply load and record bending strain against axial strain at defined levels.
  • Compare the percent bending against the class or limit required by the applicable method.
  • Adjust grips, adapters, or alignment fixtures and re-check as needed.

Reading the Designation

Cited with a year suffix, such as ASTM E1012-19. Confirm the edition, since classes and measurement details can change between revisions.

Related Standards

ASTM E4 verifies machine force, ASTM E83 verifies extensometers, and ASTM E8/E8M is a tensile method that depends on a well-aligned load train.
