ASTM D143 – Small clear specimens of timber
ASTM D143 is the ASTM set of test methods for determining the strength and related mechanical properties of wood using small clear specimens. To match this to your program, talk with our team.
What ASTM D143 Covers
It covers specimens free of knots and defects and includes static and impact bending, compression parallel and perpendicular to grain, shear parallel to grain, and related property tests for comparing wood species.
How the Test Is Run
Standard-size clear specimens at controlled moisture content are loaded in the appropriate fixture for each property, and modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, and strength values are calculated from the load and specimen dimensions.
Why It Matters
Clear-specimen data provides baseline mechanical properties for species comparison and the derivation of design values; accurate specimen preparation and conditioning are essential to valid results.
Reading the Designation
Cited as ASTM D143 with its edition year. Confirm the version, specimen sizes, and conditioning requirements before finalizing your setup.
