What ASTM C39 Covers

The method loads a molded or cored concrete cylinder in axial compression to failure and reports the compressive strength. It is the standard basis for accepting concrete mixtures on construction projects.

How the Test Is Run

A cylinder is capped or ground for flat, parallel ends and loaded at a controlled rate until it fails. The maximum load divided by the cross-sectional area gives the compressive strength, and the fracture pattern is recorded.
