ASTM C297 is the test method for measuring the flatwise tensile strength of sandwich constructions, loading the panel through its thickness to evaluate the core and the core-to-facing bond. To match a setup to this test, talk with our team.
What ASTM C297 Measures
The test pulls a sandwich sample perpendicular to its facings, so the weakest through-thickness element governs: the core material or the adhesive bond between core and facing. It is used to qualify sandwich panels for aerospace and structural use.
How the Test Is Run
A sample is bonded to loading blocks and pulled in tension normal to the facings until failure. The failure mode, whether in the core or at the bond line, is as informative as the strength value.
Preparing Specimens
Flat, parallel loading surfaces and a sound bond to the blocks are essential for a valid result. To set up flatwise tensile testing, request a quote.

Cited as ASTM C297/C297M with a year suffix. Confirm the edition and the block-bonding method.
Related Standards
EN 319 measures a similar tensile-perpendicular (internal bond) strength for panels.
